Tiger Mentoring

WHAT IS A TIGER MENTOR?

A Tiger Mentor is someone who sets a positive example for the young person by providing support, friendship, and encouragement.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

Tiger Mentoring is a school-based program. Mentors are asked to commit one hour per week during the school day, during the moths school is in session. A one school year commitment is requested, with the goal of the mentor and mentee continuing to meet as long as the student is at Spencer Middle School.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING MENTOR TIME?

matches are made based on common interests. Time spent is about talking and having fun. This may involve, shooting hoops, playing board or card games, doing an art or craft project, baking, playing a game on the Wii, or another activity.

WHERE DO MATCHES MEET?

All meetings take place at Spencer Middle School

WHO ARE MENTORS?

Mentors come from all walks of live and all sectors of our community - exposing their mentees to new ideas, new experiences and new interests that get them involved in positive activities in their hometowns.
HOW IS TIGER MENTORING RECOGNIZED?

Tiger Mentoring is a part of the Iowa Mentoring Partnership. An initiative of the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, the Iowa Mentoring Partnership upholds the commission's mission to "Improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering" by supporting quality mentoring programs.

HOW IS THE PROGRAM FUNDED?

Tiger Mentoring has an advisory council that oversees the operations of the programs. The program is supported by Spencer Schools, with operating costs generously donated by local services groups.  The program was kick started by grants from the Clay County Community Foundation and Spencer School Foundation.

WHY ARE MENTORING PROGRAMS IMPORTANT?

At its most basic level, mentoring works because it guarantees a young person that there is an adult who cares about them and that they are not alone in dealing with day-to-day challenges. At a more complex level, there is a powerful mentoring effect that ultimately makes our community stronger.
